Art of Giving - Lai See Design

Lai See Packet Design Project - The Art of Giving

Brief Overview -
In this project we were tasked with having to create a Lai See packet design that represented and stuck to cultural rules but was also innovative and different in order to draw the client in.

Client -
Local Hong Kong residents celebrating CNY (Chinese new year)

Context -
During CNY in Hong Kong, people give out cash in these red envelopes called Lai See. The money inside is not as important as what the red packet symbolises whether it be wishing for luck or prosperity it is the thought that counts.

Challenge -
Design an Illustrated Lai See packet design and an animation that can be applied and used with augmented reality

Purpose -
To be used by the public to wish everyone a happy Chinese New Year!

Final Mockup

Reflection on the whole project
Overall, This project helped me better understand the nature and culture behind Chinese New Year, even after living in Hong Kong my whole life I never truly understood the significance behind wishing others luck in prosperity as a way of having a fresh view and start towards the new year. There were however, some challenges involved with making this outcome like any project. Specifically, when making the animation / augmented reality portion it took me a while to complete and properly execute without messing up but, I asked for help when needed and ended up finishing on time. lastly, I enjoyed creating these pieces that correspond to the family time and gatherings that take place typically around this time and hope that my work has reached it's client happily.
